A Haldi Ceremony at Big Sur River Inn — Bay Area Indian Wedding Photographer

A Haldi Ceremony at Big Sur River Inn

Big Sur Wedding

Big Sur River Inn delivers one of the most beautiful outdoor settings for an Indian wedding on the Central Coast. As a Big Sur wedding photographer, I captured this Haldi ceremony on the lawn in front of the river in May. The light was warm, the energy was high, and the turmeric was everywhere. In short, it was exactly what a Haldi should be.

The Haldi moves fast. It pulls everyone in and leaves no one on the sidelines. Turmeric paste lands on hands and cheeks. Laughter fills the lawn. Someone’s grandmother gets involved, whether she planned to or not. This ceremony had all of it.

H2: Big Sur Wedding Photographer at the River Inn

Big Sur River Inn sits right on the river at the edge of the redwoods. As a result, the outdoor space stays soft and shaded throughout the morning. I shot this ceremony on digital, 35mm film, 120 medium format, and Polaroid. Film handles the yellows and oranges of a Haldi in a way digital simply cannot match. The turmeric reads warm and rich. The skin tones stay true. Overall, the images feel like a memory rather than a record.

For this reason, I always recommend film for Indian wedding ceremonies. The color and grain add a warmth that fits the mood of a Haldi perfectly.

Documenting an Indian Wedding in Big Sur

Indian weddings span several days and several ceremonies. Each one carries its own energy and emotional tone. The Haldi, in particular, tends to be the loosest and the loudest of all the pre-wedding events. The couple stays surrounded by the people who have known them longest. As a result, the whole thing moves at a pace that makes documentary style the only approach that works.

I never direct anything at a Haldi. Instead, I move with the room and let the moments find me. This keeps the ceremony feeling like itself rather than a photo shoot.

Plan Your Indian Wedding in Big Sur

If you’re planning an Indian wedding or a multi-day celebration in Big Sur, I’d love to talk about coverage. Additionally, I work throughout the Monterey Peninsula and across the Bay Area. My approach combines 35mm film, medium format, and Polaroid into a hybrid workflow. Furthermore, I shoot in a documentary style that keeps every ceremony feeling natural and real.
